Halloween Ready: Modcloth

It’s finally October and I thought it would be a great idea to share with you some awesome Halloween-themed finds from my favorite online shops! This week’s shop is ModCloth. This quirky, retro and vintage-inspired online store is my absolute favorite because they carry novelty prints, dresses with odd cuts and colorful items to decorate your home. They are known for their simple, yet fun dresses, so why not start off this post with a dress?

Spirit in the Fright Dress

“Pumpkins, kittens, and cobwebs – oh my! Part of our ModCloth namesake label, this adorably printed dress proves there’s nothing to be afraid of, with a precious scaredy cat motif atop its rich amethyst base. Cute and cottony, this V-neck frock is full of frightful delight!”

This purple dress has scaredy cats all over it, even some kitty ghosts! The price is a little steep for an unlined dress with no pockets but… kittehs! Reviews say armholes are a bit big but a black cardigan would look great with it.

Here Candy, Candy Tee

“Ever eat so much candy you felt like you might turn into the sweet stuff? Well, the kitty that’s screen printed on this black tee – an exclusive to ModCloth – must have done just that! Sport this seasonal scoop neck this fall, or rock it any ol’ time you want to exude your signature quirk!”

Look cute while running errands with this tee! It’s perfect for fall and it’ll look great with these:

Favorite Favor Earrings

“As far as you’re concerned, autumn is the sweetest time of year – because you get to wear these candy corn earrings! Colorblocked in white, orange, and yellow, these studs take the shape of your favorite fall-time treat and add a kernel of cuteness to your day.”

Candy corn has never been my favorite Halloween treat but you gotta admit it’s the most iconic one. Wear these to add some fun to your everyday outfit. I’m sure someone will ask where you got them!

ModClothBabyGotBatbagBaby Got Bat Bag

“Before you head out to your favorite haunts, you zip your wallet, phone, and lip gloss into this adorably bat-shaped bag! Its black, vegan faux-leather construction, slender removable strap, and handy back pocket make it a charming companion on your nocturnal adventures. Sling this purse over the shoulder of your khaki trench, velvety A-line shift, and dramatic, spike-embellished heels for a playful look with a vampy touch!”

This batacular bag is just big enough to carry the essentials: phone, cards and some cash. Perfect for parties and concerts!

OOTD: Eye-Catching Doughnuts

I decided to make this week’s Outfit of the Day more modern by focusing on bold colors. Pantone already released their Spring 2016 Fashion Color Report and it’s, unfortunately, colors I would never wear. But I took their almost neon color report as inspiration to create this wild and funky themed outfit. A doughnut shirt hiding among other “normal” ones in my drawer helped me with the theme. You’ll be sure to turn heads and get a ton of smiles with this outfit. Maybe a few laughs as well but that doesn’t matter. Do you, boo. Do you.

Wearing Vintage: Blue Fennel

Scrolling down #vintagedress on Instagram, I found Blue Fennel Vintage, a vintage clothing and accessories store on Etsy owned by Stephanie. I fell in love with a skirt from the 60s and I made the purchase without giving it much thought. The listing said the waist was 28″ minimum, two inches bigger than my natural waist but I knew I’d alter it. Not really having an occassion to wear it, she has been hanging safely in my closet, unfortunately.

About a month later, Stephanie posted what I like to call a “skirt teaser” and I adored the lavender flowers thinking they would pop with my hair color. She told me I could pay in installments and I took advantage of her offer. A week and a half later, I was the happy owner of this amazing dress.

Blue Fennel often has great sales and that’s how I got this beauty:

The fabric is a little warmer than what I usually wear, so I’m waiting for cooler weather to show it off. What do I mean by cooler weather? 70°-80°. Ah, the joys of living on a tropical island.

Outfit of the Day: Modern 60’s

After seeing so many vintage-inspired looks at New York Fashion Week, I decided to give 60’s Mod my own little twist. People know how obsessed I am with themed outfits. If I’m wearing my favorite fruit print Lazy Oaf top, check out my ears. I’ll be sporting fruit earrings. Cupcake shoes? Cupcake earrings! Strawberry dress? Strawberry purse! It’s a problem. A good one to have.

I began looking for the perfect modern shift dress and found this pastel Valentino one. It reminded me of Neapolitan ice-cream so I went from there! I knew I wanted to pair it with knee high camel boots and an ice cream purse. Round sunglasses were a must and these ModCloth earrings go perfectly with them.

NYFW: Modern 60’s at Jeremy Scott’s Spring/Summer 2016 Collection

Crop tops, bikinis, retro separates and shift dresses. Need I say more? This pop-art inspired collection featured psychedelic patterns and vibrant colors. Models like Gigi and Bella Hadid strutted down the runway with teased wigs, orange lips and glued-on nails. This groovy collection is an electrifying blast to the past with a modern twist.

Jeremy Scott is one of today’s trendiest designers. Remember the retro stewardess costume worn by Britney Spears in her “Toxic” music video? It’s by Jeremy Scott. Who could forget Katy Perry’s multiple costumes at her Super Bowl XLIX Half Time show performance? They were all created by him.

Jeremy Scott, the current creative director of Moschino, is often compared to Betsey Johnson and I can tell why. Both love working with bold, extravagant looks and aren’t afraid of odd prints. What’s the difference? Betsey Johnson is leaning more towards impractical. I love her accessories, but I’d rather wear Jeremy Scott. Oh, and have you seen how fun his website is?

NYFW: 70’s Flair in Diane Von Furstenberg’s Spring/Summer 2016 Collection

DVF’s collection was inspired by a painting of the Roman goddess of justice, Fortuna. It had a touch of the 70s with elegant draping and lose silhouettes. Her pieces had pink tones, metallic touches and featured some whimsical prints.

The designer also debuted her first footwear collection with Caleres, formerly known as Brown Shoe Company. It included strappy sandals, chunky heels and flats with floral prints and gold tones.

Kendall Jenner and Gigi Hadid are some of the models that walked her runway. Karlie Kloss opened the show with a version of the now iconic wrap dress.

The second season of House of DVF premiered last night on E! Who are you rooting for?

NYFW: 60’s Mod in Betsey Johnson’s Spring / Summer 2016 Collection

Betsey Johnson has been one of my favorite designers for a long time. My fascination with her began with the accessories. Fun purses, chunky necklaces and wild shoes. This 73-year- old designer is a 21-year-old at heart and loves incorporating elements of the 60s and 70s, the punk subculture and all things whimsical in her designs. Her NYFW show began with colorful and poofy show-stoppers.

Her prints were floral, cherry and geometric shapes, among others.

She also showed her love for edginess.

And of course, mod-inspired mini dresses.

I like very few pieces in this collection. Many of them are too “costume-y.” Definitely not my favorite Betsey Johnson show but you got to hand it to her, she still makes eye-catching dresses. The music changed during the show so much that it got very confusing at one point. Having the models go back on the runway to dance forcefully was also not a good idea. A mess or just press hungry? Any press is good press, I guess.

Prepping Your Closet for Fall

Fall will be here in a few weeks and it’s time to reorganize our closets. Make sweaters more accessible and put anything too bright at the very back.  Focus on a color palette. I’ve always loved yellow tones for the fall.  It’s easy to work around yellow and it’s usually the brightest yet acceptable color for the season. If this color does not work for you, pick another one off Pantone’s Fall 2015 Fashion Color Report. There are many options!

You don’t have to pull an all-nighter looking for clothing in these exact colors. Can’t find anything in dried herb? Look for something in olive. Nothing in oak buff? Try mustard. I believe in reusing and up-cycling. Have a swap party or check out your nearest thrift stores. Marsala may be hard to find but you may end up with something in burgundy.

Don’t be afraid to wear black and brown at the same time. Yes, brown is perfect for autumn and it’s always the neutral fashion magazines tell us to wear during this season but you can’t deny that black is one of the most sophisticated colors. The trick is to focus on one of them and use the other to accessorize. A color that ties them together is ideal but not necessary. A simple black dress can be eye-catching with a brown belt and even some cute boots!

I made the following set using a yellow tone to tie brown and black together. Brown sunglasses and black pants or leggings divided by a color that works well with both of them. And as always, I added a hint of quirkiness and a pop of color with the Ollie and Nic apple bag.

Blue Hues and Color Psychology

I’ve been fascinated by Color Psychology since my sophomore year of college when I took the class that changed my life: Costume Design. For our final project we had to read a play and design two-three costume changes per character. We all had to seek inspiration from somewhere but I decided to go with Color Psychology.

Out of all the colors of the rainbow, blue is the one that catches my eye the most. It inspires trust, honesty and loyalty. It’s the most liked color of all, probably because it’s safe and non-threatening. It was the perfect color for the innocent character of the play, a 15 year old girl.

Although I’ve never been a fan of how blue looks on me, this peacock print dress by Retrolicious caught my eye as soon as I saw it hit the ModCloth site. Cotton and pockets. It couldn’t be anymore perfect. As usual, I couldn’t afford it. Luckily, someone was selling three of them on the Facebook clothing swap group for $20–shipped!

How do you think colors affect purchases? Was I inclined to buy the dress because of its color?
