Polka Dots

Polka dot is one of the most popular patterns used in fashion. It exudes the simplicity needed to make something versatile and classic. Smaller polka dots look elegant, while bigger ones look modern and trendy.

Although we’re not sure when polka dots first appeared, they became very popular in the late nineteenth century in the UK. It wasn’t until 1926, when Miss America was photographed wearing a polka dot swimsuit that they became common in clothing in the US. They began popping up everywhere during the late 40s and early 50s, when the pinup girl was in. I believe they’ll never go out of style and they look great on anyone. Even some modern brides search for a polka dot bridal gown.

My closet is full of polka dot clothes, this dress being one of favorites. I got it at Walmart for $12 and I’ve had it for years. I’m able to wear different colors with it because it’s black. You can never go wrong with black or white polka dots. On the other hand, colored polka dots can be hard to wear often not just because of the limited number of matching articles of clothing, but also because they draw more attention and people are likely to remember you wearing that orange on yellow polka dot skirt two months ago at your sister’s baby shower. Or you know, wherever.

Are you a fan of polka dots? Do you find them cute or corny?

Overalls are back!

1

Back to talking about fashion!

A few months back I saw a girl in one of my classes wearing overalls.  I thought: “Well, she’s trying really hard to be hipster,” but as time went by, I noticed more and more guys and girls wearing them.  The last time I remember overalls being on trend was in the 1990s.  Twenty-something years have already passed, so it’s about time they’re back.  Overalls are comfortable because you don’t have to think so much about what to pair them with.  They’re an easy piece of clothing to wear.  I’ve noticed that, like all trends, it came back with a twist.  Trends never come back exactly the same, just with the original idea.

Although some overalls are showing up with the same concept but with bold prints, they are also popping up as dresses.  Yes, overall-dresses.  Forever 21 has a variety of them on their website for a good price.  (I already ordered a pair and can’t wait to get home to try them on!)

L’histoire!

(That was me practicing my French)

Up for a little history lesson?

Overalls emerged centuries ago and were meant for workers to protect their clothing.  Here are the different definitions it was given at different eras:

  • 1792 “overalls” or “overall trousers” = “trousers worn outside the normal trousers to protect them.”
  • 1815 “overall” = “any outermost coat or cloak.”

It is said they arrived to the US sometime between 1890s-1990s and were worn by mechanics during the first decade of the century.  Women also wore them during World War I in factories in England.

They became fashionable during the late 1960s-1970s and made a comeback during the 1990s.  (I remember).

For those ladies wanting to look as retro or vintage-y as possible, these are a great option for you:

I remember wearing jeans with suspenders during my junior high days and being looked at as a total freak of nature.  I’m always ahead of time 😉

Spice Things Up!

Hello ladies.  Missed me?  I know you did.  I’m sorry for being away so long.  I’ve been feeling a little down and the purpose of this blog is to spread positivity and Melly Downers wasn’t going to be able to do that.  Today I got up and did the usual:  turn on my laptop, look for The Young Turks channel on YouTube and let the videos play while I made my one and only cup of coffee of today.  I finished watching their new videos and put 80s music on Pandora and began to read stuff on my Facebook newsfeed.  This status caught my attention, because it said exactly what I was going to post on my next status.  It was posted by a dear friend of mine.  I covered up her name and profile picture.

Summer

“Summer… What is that?”
“Beach… What is that?”

I felt as if I’ve also forgotten what these things are.  It’s been two years since I purchased my first vintage-inspired swimsuit and the tags are still on it.  Sad, I know.  But the truth is, I don’t have many friends and whenever the few I have decide to go to the beach, I can’t because of my duty of getting people drunk.  I always find myself slowly becoming a depressed person during summertime and I’m sure it’s because I only stare at a computer screen, eat… And that’s about it.  I never do anything fun and whenever my mood changes and I’m up to do almost anything, I never find who to do it with.

I become unhappy and my confidence starts to diminish.  My breast lump scare a few months ago made me want to push through that unhappy feeling because life is too short to be in a sucky mood.  So, I will now share with you the things you must do to get yourself out of that funk and in a happy place again.  You’ll find most of these silly, but that’s the point.  Silliness brings joy and laughter to a person’s life.  I’ve done all of these in moments of sadness and I guarantee you, they work.

–         Wear lingerie to bed, even if you sleep alone.

Just to feel lingerie against you skin is extremely sexy, imagine just staring at yourself in the mirror before you go to sleep.  Your pillow will feel extremely lucky.  If you don’t want to go all out, check out Forever21.  They have gorgeous one and two piece sets!  I got this one a while back for $16 and it’s not available on their site anymore, but if you truly love it, you’ll hunt it down!

The polka dots and color feel so me!  And even though I got it in a medium and the thong doesn’t fit me, I still feel sexy in it!  If you have my “problem” (which is not really a problem, it’s a blessing) of being pear shaped, just buy another thong separately!

–          Wear sexy underwear.

It’s kinda like the first one, but the thought of walking around wearing lace undies or even geeky panties, (if the Batman or Superman logo is your thing) and people not knowing is fun!  So ditch the granny panties and treat yourself!  Or combine your sexy and geek side and get yourself some BunnyJump underwear.

BunnyJump

–         Date yourself.

I don’t know if it’s just me, but there’s something I find extremely sexy about a woman dining by herself.  And yes, she may have been stood up, but just the fact that she ordered herself a little something just screams “I’m so confident, I’m going to treat myself like the princess I am.”  So go ahead and order that margarita.  If you’re afraid of people staring at you, just go to the movies.  I used to do this all the time!  The best part?  No one will be eating out of your popcorn bag / bucket or whatever it is you get.  You get to pick the movie, so take advantage of the situation and watch that chick flick you’ve secretly been dying to see.  Cry during the breakup scene and laugh at the poor men dragged by their girlfriends to watch the movie with them.

–         Dance.  Like a fool.

Look for a fun station on Pandora and dance your socks off.  I always shuffle between the 80s Music, 80s Pop, 60s, 70s & 80s hits, and Journey stations.  Yes, I already know most of the songs.  (You want to know what irritates me?  “Turning Japanese” never pops up on any of the stations.)  What the hell, Pandora?  And while the annoying ad interrupts your dance fest, hydrate to continue!  Or do like me, lip sync to Flo, the Progressive lady.  (I must dress like her for a future Halloween!)

I hope the idea of doing some of these put a smile on your face, as it did on mine.  Remember that you don’t have to feel lonely when you’re alone.  Be your own best friend and you’ll look forward to “me” moments in no time.

Curves & Swimsuits

Summer is here, at least for those in the US (since it’s always summer in Puerto Rico.)  If you’re swimsuit shy, like me, you may find this helpful.

I’ve dreaded swimsuits since I was 9 years old.  I started to gain weight at that age and began to wear one pieces when going to the beach with my family.  I was easier to socialize with back then and I remember meeting a boy once during vacation.  We would play volleyball in pools and had cannonball competitions.  He would always say I won because I was “husky.”  Yes, he actually said that.  I tried forgetting about it and pretended I was ok, but I still remember it.  I also remember the swimsuit that got me called “husky.”  It was a hot pink one piece with some beading around the waist.

I didn’t go to the beach for years after that and simply watched TV while my family had all the fun during summer.  Around ages 13-14 I lost a significant amount of weigh and got to a size 3, but I still thought I was that husky girl.  I gained weight again and forced myself to go have fun in a pool just a few years ago.  Everyone was in a bikini and I was too, but I wore a skirt to hide a bit of my cellulite and my post-baby pooch (although I haven’t had a baby.)  Needless to say, I didn’t like the way I looked in pictures and wondered why swimsuits in malls are always the same: itty bitty bikinis—Yeah, screw the curvy girls with a few extra pounds.  Don’t get me wrong, some of us curvy gals can confidently rock a bikini, but I can’t.  I would feel self conscious and wouldn’t be able to have fun at all.

Just a couple of years ago I started to embrace my curves because they’re here to stay and I can’t waste time hating them.  This is probably why I’m very into the Pin Up era.  Curves were considered beautiful and the curvy girl was always picked over the skinny one.  I have nothing against skinny girls, but it’s usually easier for them to find a swimsuit they feel comfortable in.

I purchased my first vintage-inspired swimsuit two years ago from a lady who was about to close her Pin Up boutique here in PR.  I was sad but at the same time, I scored a $102 bathing suit for $50.  Not bad.  She only had it in Medium, but I didn’t care, it was a steal.  I’m not really into the color, but I love the shape.  It has rouching that helps conceal belly pooches and love handles.  It also keeps boobies up high.  It comes in several beautiful colors and you can find it on www.pinupgirlclothing.com

If you just want to hide the pooch and nothing more, www.unique-vintage.com has many options for you.  I got this two piece baby and it fits great!  It comes in black as well!  If you’re short like me, you can pull the bottoms down a bit to hide some cellulite.

If you want to hide it completely, longer, cute-looking suits are available.

Or, you could get a removable swim skirt from Pin Up Girl Clothing:

Now that’s a skirt I wouldn’t mind wearing!

If you’re just curvy and don’t want to hide anything but still want to look retro, try a suit like this one:

You can also get it at Modcloth.  [http://www.modcloth.com/shop/twopiece-swimwear/cutie-pie-picnic-two-piece]
I hope you’re enjoying your summer and remember, there’s a suit for every BODY.
