Q & A with Femme De Bloom’s Melanie!

Get ready for cuteness overload because today you’ll meet darling Melanie, the quirky mind behind Femme De Bloom!  This Psychology Doctoral student spends a lot of her time designing and creating unique accessories.  Her handmade designs range from polka-dotted  earrings to flower crown headbands.

Melanie takes custom orders as well.  If you can think it, she can make it.  So whether you’re a retro, vintage-loving gal like me, a Disney junkie or a sports fan, Femme De Bloom is the place to go!   This Etsy shop is chock-full of options.  Oh!  And Melanie also makes custom plugs for you modified beauties.  Doesn’t matter what gauge size you need.  I think I learned about the Etsy shop through Instagram.  I purchased the Snow White inspired earring set and the Betty Button set.  Shipping was way fast, considering I don’t live in the continental US.

Now let’s get to know the cute crafter, Melanie.

When did you start Femme De Bloom and why?

I started FemmeDeBloom exactly a year ago (November 4, 2013!). It started with an idea I had to sell some Minnie and Mickey inspired ornaments I had created for friends and family the year before. After seeing how much my friends loved them, I thought I would give it a try to start a shop, list them, and see how it went. To my surprise, I ended up selling over 500 ornaments last year! I had so much fun making the ornaments and connecting with customers that I wanted to continue the shop beyond the holidays. That is when I started looking into making jewelry and accessories and the ideas just kept flowing from there! I chose the name FemmeDeBloom because it’s a crossover between English and French (my two favorite languages) and it means “Woman in Bloom.” As a woman, I aspire to grow and expand my knowledge and experience of the world on a daily basis! So in a sense, I always consider myself a “woman in bloom.”

Have you always been a crafty person?  If not, at what age did you start crafting?

I was taught to be a crafty person at a very young age by my beautiful, wonderful mother, who is also my best friend. My first memory of crafting was painting shirts and sneakers with puffy paint with my mom. We would have “Mom and Mel” days where we would go to the craft store and get supplies and spend the whole day making things! I’ll admit though, some of the things I painted on my shirts and shoes were ridiculous. One of my favorites is a pair of sneakers that I drew a dozen hammerhead sharks on. To this day it’s an inside joke between me and mom and I have absolutely NO idea why I chose to draw hammerhead sharks, ha ha! So the answer is, yes, I’ve definitely always been a crafty person and I have my mom to thank for that!

Out of all your Femme De Bloom pieces, which one is your favorite and why?

This is a tough question! I truly love every single piece I’ve made for the shop, including customs. However, I think it is a tie between the Princess Belle inspired necklace/earring set (because she’s my favorite Disney princess) and the “Pink Tea Party” fabric earring set because it combines polka dots, pink, and floral print which are all my favorites!

BelleFemme   PinkTeaParty

What is the most challenging part of hand making cute accessories?

I definitely think the most challenging part for me is making mistakes. People who know me have to remind me to stop over-analyzing my designs because I always want everything to look and present itself perfectly! Especially with the clay work, I have had to learn to cut myself some slack when I make a mistake (like when I burned an entire batch of clay Minnie donuts in the oven!) and not beat myself up over it!

Have you had any funny or scary incidents while getting crafty?

Yes, and Yes! As far as funny, I often have pieces of glue or paint stuck in my hair, on my clothes, or on my arms and hands and people are always pointing it out thinking I have a bruise or dandruff in my hair with the white paint (embarrassing!!!). But that’s the sacrifice I make for FemmeDeBloom!! 🙂 And as far as scary, I’ve burned myself several times pretty badly with glue gun glue and an iron and it’s pretty painful!

Do you believe accessories really pull an outfit together?

Absolutely! I don’t leave the house without some type of accessory! I think that accessories are a great, cost-effective way to spruce up an outfit! Sometimes buying or making a new accessory has helped me revamp some articles of clothing that I haven’t worn in years. It’s also super fun to coordinate outfits with specific accessories, which I do the most when I visit Disneyland or I’m dressing for a holiday, hence the reason I tend to go overboard with themes in my shop and with giveaways!

What is your go to accessory?

Hmm…this one is another tough one! I seriously love all accessories, but on a daily basis I would have to say that it’s either earrings or necklaces. But headbands and bows are also great for bad or lazy hair days!

What does a day in your shoes look like?

A day in my shoes honestly depends on the day of the week! During the week, I am also a clinical psychology doctoral student, a tutor, an intern, and I occasionally teach undergraduate psychology courses, so it very much depends! During the week I am mostly fulfilling those roles and shipping out orders and on the weekends I spend time with my boyfriend, friends and family and do the most crafting!

“You can always tell what kind of a person a man really thinks you are by the earrings he gives you.” – Audrey Hepburn.  Do you think this is true and why?

Ooo, I haven’t heard this quote from her before and I love it! Audrey is one of the greats! I definitely think this is true because if a man knows you, he will get you earrings (or any jewelry for that matter) that reflects your personal style. If he gets it right, then he’s a keeper because he has taken the time to observe who you are and what your personal style is!

What inspires you?

Inspiration is such a wonderful thing, and I’ll have to say that I get inspiration from everyone and everything that I can. I am inspired by my loved ones and people that are a positive influence in my life. However, I am also inspired by so many of the other crafters I’ve met on Instagram AND my customers! Some of the most popular pieces in the shop were inspired by custom orders! I am also inspired by Disney movies (obviously) and the things I love! Every single piece in my shop is a reflection of something I love and my own personal style. As you can see, if you go through the shop, it’s a bit random because I love so many different types of characters and styles. But I created this shop so that I can make people happy with what I love and hopefully what they love also!

What is your definition of true beauty?

To me, true beauty is a person being their authentic self and not apologizing for it. We have so much pressure in society to fit in and to follow certain rules and regulations regarding our actions and our outward appearance. I think that it takes courage and represents true beauty when a person is comfortable in their own skin, has taken the time to figure out who they are, and isn’t afraid to BE it! I also think true beauty encompasses vulnerability, openness, and a non-judgmental spirit.

Current Favorites: Skin

Hey girlies!  I haven’t updated you on my “favorites.”  I believe it’s been almost a year since I last told you what I was absolutely loving.  I decided to start off with makeup/skin, just because I think it’s funner.  I will later share with you my current hair favorites.

Let’s start with skin protection.  I have really sensitive skin.  Just sneeze on me and I’ll break out in hives.  I know some of these things aren’t really “makeup products” but it’s better to apply makeup on skin that has been taken care of!

Dove Sensitive Skin Soap Bar

dove-skin-bar$3.47, Walmart

Yes, at $3.47 (for a two-pack) is pretty expensive, but if your skin gets easily irritated like mine, you will forever be grateful for this.  Of course, it’s unscented, sadly.  I’ve almost jammed it up my nose trying to smell it.

Johnson’s Baby Shampoo

Shampoo$3.98, Walmart

I know what you’re thinking.  “But I don’t have a baby.”  Ok, you don’t have a baby, but if you do, save yourself some bucks buy using this as a makeup remover!  And if you’re not a momma, just get yourself a bottle.  It doesn’t dry my skin and it’s super gentle.  Removes makeup in no time.  It’s perfect for sensitive skin, unlike makeup removing cloths.  Those things leave red patches on my face.  No bueno.

Neutrogena Sport Face Oil-Free Lotion

neutrogena$9.97, Walmart ($12 if you’re in PR)

I’ve noticed my moisturizing lotion (with SPF 15) just wasn’t cutting it.  My nose was peeling due to sun exposure.  I had seen this at Walmart during one of my weekly grocery shopping trips but didn’t buy it because I thought it was expensive.  I regret not buying it sooner.  It doesn’t stink up my face like ordinary sunscreen, resists sweat (a big woo-hoo!) and it won’t clog pores.  Yes, it’s also water resistant (up to 80 minutes).  This blends smoothly and quickly onto my skin and applying makeup over it isn’t a hassle!  The best part?  SPF 70, baby.

L’Oréal Magic Nude Liquid Powder

$10.97, Walmart

Do you believe in magic?  Get ready, ’cause you’re about to.  This foundation really impressed me.  Within seconds, my face looked as if I had already applied powder.  The down side?  It’s not for dry skin.  My skin was going through a dry phase at the time and this looked horrible.  After a few scrubs with my Baiden mitten, the problem was fixed.  Oh la la!  Matte skin!

BareMinerals Well-Rested Eye Brightener

$18, Ulta

This thing really does brighten the under-eye area, making dark circles less visible!  But!  A tiny bit goes a long way!  Seriously, too much will make your face look oh-so-cakey.  Yuck! I don’t even remember how I found out about this product.  It was probably thanks to a beauty guru on YouTube.  Thank you, beauty guru!

Hopefully you’re willing to give at least one of these products a try.  I enjoyed trying out each and every one of these and I swear I’m sticking with them for at least a year.  Ok, maybe not.  (So many things to try out!)

Pin Up Passion Makeup Brushes 10% Off!

Not too long ago, Sorelle from Pin Up Passion launched her shmancy (let’s make that a word!) set of makeup brushes.  I remember searching for them each day during christmas time just to see if there were already available, but they weren’t.  So, no.  I didn’t get this for Christmas, unfortunately.

Shortly after, I went to a makeup seminar in my home town.  We were told we would receive makeup brushes just for attending, but was dissapointed to find out we only got four.  I was still dreaming about these.  When they became available, I was so focused in paying off my Paris trip, that I forgot to put aside the almost $50 this baby costs.

This glamour tool kit includes 11 brushes, each one specially designed for each area of the face.  You’ll get the following:

  • kabuki foundation
  • flat foundation
  • powder
  • bronzer
  • contour
  • concealer
  • eyeshadow
  • eyeshadow blending
  • eyebrow and eyeliner right angled

  • lipstick brush

Not sure how to use these?  Not to worry!  With your purchase, you’ll also get instructions!  AND!  There’s a money back garantee 🙂  But I doubt you’ll want to return this set.

I’ve been reading and watching reviews (blogs and YouTube) and 99% of them are super positive.  This brush set is only available in the US (for now– don’t worry International gals!) and it’s being sold for $47.99… BUT!  Sorelle gave me a code to share with you guys to save you 10%!  Don’t you just love discounts?

Urban Decay Revolution Lipsticks (Giveaway!)

I’ve been going crazy over the Urban Decay Revolution Lipsticks since Ipsy sent me a sample in the shade 69 (A cherry red.)  They go on smoothly and don’t flake on me.  Unlike most lipsticks, these ones won’t make my lips look dry after a few hours.  I’ve tried the colors Anarchy, Venom, F-Bomb and Obssesed.  (Note to self: Ask for an awesome camera for Christmas.  Readers should be able to see how these things look on me.)

Anyhoo… I purchased a Venom lipstick and lipliner by mistake.  (Whaaaat?) Yes, please believe me!  I swear I’m telling the truth.

I’m a hardcore Kandee Johnson follower and not so long ago, she uploaded a video to YouTube: A tour of Urban Decay.  At the end of the video, she announces a special price for the lipstick and liner duo for her viewers and ipsy subscribers: just $35.  The limited time offer was only available in two colors: Venom and Jilted.  I guess curiosity killed the cat because I just really wanted to see a swatch of the Venom one.  I clicked on the link and since my Ipsy account was already logged in, I automatically purchased the duo.  I had a few hours to cancel the purchase after receiving the order confirmation.  But I got it while I was in a three hour class and when I finally read the e-mail, it was already too late.  I tried begging ipsy to cancel the order, but that didn’t work.

I thought long and hard about keeping them, but I already have similar colors, even though they are not Urban Decay.

I’m giving the duo away!  Who will be the lucky reader?

There are two ways to enter:

1.  Like my Facebook Page and share it on your Timeline.  Take a screenshot/screengrab of it (the shared post) and post it on my wall.  (I need evidence, ladies!)

2.  Like my Facebook Page and post a picture on my wall of your most recent look.  (Fashion and/or makeup).

Yes, I know Rafflecopter exists, but my Website is hosted by for free and I can’t use Javascript.  Sorry! 😦

Winner will be announced on Halloween.  Good luck!

Pin Up Skin

Picking up where we left off: Pin Up Skin.  Family members and friends often ask me if I have a skincare routine.  I do.  My skin is not perfect.  It’s very sensitive, meaning I have to take extra good care of it and watch what I apply on my face.  I break out rarely, but when I do, I get irritated and self-conscious, like most women.  So let’s start off with cleansing.

I alternate between St. Ives Naturally Clear Green Tea Scrub and Clean & Clear Morning Burst Facial Cleanser.  I use only one of the products each day, not wanting too many chemicals coming in contact with my skin.  I use the Morning Burst in the mornings, of course, and I like to use the Green Tea Scrub at night while I shower.  They’re both oil-free and leave a light, fresh fragrance, not too harsh for those with sensitive skin.  These are affordable; both sell for less than $8, full size.  I like buying them travel size, because they’re easier to store away when sharing a bathroom with three other women.

Sun Protection

I walk to school each day with the bright sun following me.  Sunscreen is a must over here.  I suggest getting sunscreen that has at least SPF 15.  The more, the better.  If you don’t like the feeling of regular sunscreen on your face, you can opt for a BB or CC cream.  These are very similar.  BB creams are a lighter alternative to foundation while having SPF and antioxidants.  I don’t like the idea of wearing foundation each day, so I try to use it only for special occasions.  Pores need to breath as much as possible.  BB creams give more coverage than tinted moisturizers, for those wanting to hide a few blemishes without having to pack on foundation.  A friend suggested Garnier’s Skin Renew Miracle Skin Perfector BB Cream.  It has SPF 15.  I wish it had more, because I noticed my skin peeling a bit after a few weeks of walking under the sun.  I’d say it’s good for women who spend most of their time away from the from it: offices, classrooms, etc.  I use it only when I have to work because it leaves your face looking a bit dewy.  (I work in a bar, so it’s perfect.)  I got it at Walmart for $11.99.

A couple of months ago, Ipsy, a monthly make-up subscription, sent me a sample of Coola’s Mineral Sunscreen Moisturizer.  I fell in love with this thing.  They sent me the Rose Essence one.  I was not too fond of the scent, but I love the texture.  It’s extremely light, but it has SPF 20.  My skin hasn’t flaked at all since the beginning of the semester and it does, indeed, correct color, which is what CC creams are supposed to do.  It leaves my skin with a matte finish.  I had to purchase the full size after running out of my sample.  It’s pricy, but it’s the best $30-something dollars I’ve spent on a beauty product.  I found out they have an unscented one as well.  The best part?  It’s organic!

Exfoliation & Mask

Years ago, after “liking” Pin Up Passion on Facebook, Sorelle Amore began posting videos on how she achieves a flawless look using the Baiden Mitten.  This mitten, scrubs away dead skin cells and in a way, “attacks” your skin, making a new layer emerge.  It takes some getting used to and you can scrub away your whole body with it after taking a hot shower (to loosen the yucky stuff).  It’s fun and gross to see bits of dead skin coming off.  The mitten is durable and sells for $40-$50.  It’s worth it.

baidenIf you want to take skincare a step further, try Michael Todd’s Pumpkin Mask.  Ipsy sent it to me.  Be sure to get one that’s appropriate for your skin.  For some reason, Ipsy sent me one for non-sentitive skin and it burned a bit.  I didn’t like the scent at all – it smells like baby food, but it did leave my skin extremely smooth.  I suggest using it only once a week, since it can be harsh.

Remember to apply powder with a Kabuki brush!  It applies the product smoother, giving you a more natural look.  These can be found at your local Walgreens or CVS for no more than $10!  If you want to splurge, but not too much, try Soho’s!

I hope you found this post helpful  and may you become even more comfortable in your skin!

Overalls are back!

Back to talking about fashion!

A few months back I saw a girl in one of my classes wearing overalls.  I thought: “Well, she’s trying really hard to be hipster,” but as time went by, I noticed more and more guys and girls wearing them.  The last time I remember overalls being on trend was in the 1990s.  Twenty-something years have already passed, so it’s about time they’re back.  Overalls are comfortable because you don’t have to think so much about what to pair them with.  They’re an easy piece of clothing to wear.  I’ve noticed that, like all trends, it came back with a twist.  Trends never come back exactly the same, just with the original idea.

Although some overalls are showing up with the same concept but with bold prints, they are also popping up as dresses.  Yes, overall-dresses.  Forever 21 has a variety of them on their website for a good price.  (I already ordered a pair and can’t wait to get home to try them on!)

(That was me practicing my French)

Up for a little history lesson?

Overalls emerged centuries ago and were meant for workers to protect their clothing.  Here are the different definitions it was given at different eras:

  • 1792 “overalls” or “overall trousers” = “trousers worn outside the normal trousers to protect them.”
  • 1815 “overall” = “any outermost coat or cloak.”

It is said they arrived to the US sometime between 1890s-1990s and were worn by mechanics during the first decade of the century.  Women also wore them during World War I in factories in England.

They became fashionable during the late 1960s-1970s and made a comeback during the 1990s.  (I remember).

For those ladies wanting to look as retro or vintage-y as possible, these are a great option for you:

Not in your budget?  I find that these are the most versatile and pretty inexpensive.  Add a red bandana or some heels to look like your retro loving self!

I remember wearing jeans with suspenders during my junior high days and being looked at as a total freak of nature.  I’m always ahead of time 😉

Lady Stank

It’s the most horrific time of the year: back to school.  I’ve always had a love-hate relationship with this place (Río Piedras, San Juan, Puerto Rico).  It exudes a sense of freedom.  There’s art everywhere.  A plain white wall is hard to find here.  Everything seems simple.  Just like these sentences.

StreetartThese buildings greet me each day.

didntsee this every Sunday when I get to Río Piedras.

Coffee is almost at arm’s length and a cold beer is just around the corner.  People always say “good morning” as they walk past me.  It’s mostly men.  They don’t always have good intentions, so I focus on their tone.  Some of them make “good morning” sound like a rape announcement.  Those that make it sound like one, don’t get “good morning” back.  I honestly hope their morning ends up being crappy.  Like spill coffee on your crotch crappy.  I guess you could say I’m getting to the hate part of this love-hate relationship.

Time is money here.  Everything is fast paced.  The light is about to turn green?  You better be 10 miles down the road when it does ‘cause if not, Mr. I just spilled my coffee will play you the song that best describes his feelings at the moment.  A little song called “hornraping.”  Anyone can play it, really.  Just honk your horn and never let go.  A beautiful long “beep” will magically make your car disappear.  At least, that’s what Mr. I just spilled my coffee thinks.

I never get why people in cars are always in such a rush.  I’d much rather be in a car with a/c than walk to school in this heat, which is what I’ve been doing for the past 3 1/2 years.  My arms and legs are noticeably darker than the rest of my body thanks to this.  Now we’re getting to the frustration part of this post.

I can’t dress the way I want to.  The way I dress in my hometown is so different.  I always have on at least one vintage-inspired article of clothing.  I can’t do that here.  I sweat buckets of lady stank and am not willing to ruin pieces I almost killed for just to look cute at the university.  And yep, same goes for hair.  What’s the point in curling or victory-rolling it if it’ll be flat by the time I get to class?  My hair is always up in a bun, a high ponytail or maybe a braid.  That’s it, nothing special.  I’m always wearing men’s t-shirts I cut and stretch to make them look less manly.  The pricing on graphic tees is ridiculous.  A Coca-Cola logo shirt for men costs  $12 while the same shirt for women costs $18.  Yeah, I think I’m gonna go with the one for men.  $6 extra for what?  A little shape?  Pfffft!  Don’t even get me started on make-up.

Really, don’t try to get me started, ’cause I won’t start.

The heat here is different than the heat in Ponce.  It’s hot and humid at the same time while in Ponce it’s just hot.  I can wiggle my nose without breaking a sweat over there and the only thing I can wear in both places are these babies:

converseDon’t mind the dingy floor.  It’s been like that since I got here.  Nothing can make it look clean.

Ah yes, my limited edition sequin Converse.  I got these for Christmas when I was 14 years old.  They’ve been everywhere with me.  Music festivals, a Metallica concert, the mall on black friday… They don’t sell them anymore.  I wish I could buy another pair.  I plan on wearing them until they fall apart.

As I’m writing this (almost 11 PM) some kid is screaming at the top of his lungs in the middle of the street.  Why?  Because it’s Río Piedras.  It’s extremely noisy here.  Some truck, I don’t know if it’s the garbage truck or what… But it comes at 4 AM.  Gun shots can be heard almost daily.  Beeping cars are always around and here I am, trying to blog.

Yep, it’s definately a love-hate relationship I have with Río Piedras.  I feel as if I can be free here but at the same time, I can’t express myself the way I enjoy doing it: through fashion.

Throwback Wednesday

Let’s forget about throwback Thursday for a few minutes because Wednesday is my favorite day of the week.  Say hello to Throwback Wednesday.

Almost a year ago, my friends and I did a little dance to a mix of Peggy Lee’s “Fever” and Si Cranstoun’s “50’s Pin Up” at a fashion show / birthday party as a way to introduce our group, The Sunny Island PinUps.  The birthday boy was a photographer.  I think that explains the fashion show part.

It was hard to rehearse together due to our different work schedules.  In the end, there were a few bloopers here and there, but we had tons of fun.  Most of the dresses were custom made and I got lots of help with my make-up and hair (I didn’t know how to manage it back then).  The lovely Carla Lune did my hair.

Fancy looking, isn’t it?  I miss having red hair.

I really wanted an excuse to share these pictures because they remind me of a fun, great night I had during a time of sadness.  It was nice to forget about the negative stuff for a tiny while.

SIPU3    Marielle.  She did my make-up.  She made me feel so pretty that night!

Denisse AKA Denixa.  I wish I had her confidence!

Singing happy birthday.

Johnelly.  The comedienne.

    Geraldine.  The lady boss.

Sadly, there’s not a close-up picture of Michelle.  She’s like a mommy to us, because she’s a real life mommy!

Michelle is the one in the light blue dress.  Look at that proud mommy stance!

Carla Lune.  Our favorite Pin Up.

A fun smile inspired by a fun night.

Thanks for enjoying this trip down memory lane with me!

About a week ago I found myself watching crappy TV and got a craving for something sweet and salty.  Like chocolate covered pretzels.  There was nothing both sweet and salty in my fridge so I got creative.  Potato chips and chocolate ice cream?  Yes, please!  I remember texting a friend about my creation and using a useless in texts hashtag: #ForeverFat

A yummier looking version of what I made.

I find myself eating a lot of junk during summer, probably because I’m bored all the time.  I usually go back to healthy-ish eating habits and regular-esque exercise once the semester starts.  This is probably why I’m always 10-15 pounds lighter during Christmas season.  My weight is always between 140 and 155 lbs.  I would love to get down to 130-135 but eating junk occasionally won’t get me there.  This is why I believe having a non-healthy treat once a week wouldn’t be so bad!  6 days of healthy eating and one to splurge, but only once that day!  It could be either breakfast, lunch, dinner or a snack!  Maybe even a drink.

I would love for you to be a part of this journey.  Get healthy and share your #ForeverFat recipes with me!  It would be great to post them here.  Don’t have a recipe?  No problem.  Just take a picture of your meal/snack/dessert even if you didn’t make it and tell us why you like it so much.

I’ll post pictures/recipes/instructions on how to make yummy treats on Fridays, so the section will be called #ForeverFatFriday.  The reason why I picked Friday is not only to stick with the “F”, but also because I hate Fridays.  I think they’re a drag because I start working on Fridays and I hate my job.  Posting #ForeverFatFriday treats on the blog will keep me looking forward to something on such a so-so day.

So go ahead!  Send me your yummy treats to my e-mail: or send me message through Facebook!

Eating healthy shouldn’t be a drag and Fridays shouldn’t be either.
